The art of sexuality...

I thought for today’s post I would discuss something a little controversial. I have always been very open minded and ones sexuality is no exception to this. Living in a highly religious country with extremely traditional gender roles and ideas on sexuality, this is quite a rare opinion to have! I think having a love for art and travel though has really helped to open my eyes and I have come to learn that people express themselves in many different ways and sexuality is of course one of these.

So what does this have to do with art you may ask? Well I like to keep up with the latest happenings in the art world and I came across an article which spoke about an art exhibition displaying LGBTQ models. The exhibition was founded in Canada by trans artist and activist Cassils and it is traveling around German museums. Advertising for the campaign can also be seen around Germany – or can it? Controversy arises as a poster for the campaign was banned from being displayed in a train station due to its sexual nature. Well yes the poster is sexualised but so are all other posters depicting models that one can see all around.

It seems to me that this is an excuse to demonise something that doesn’t fit in with traditional heterosexual ideals. For me this was an extremely exciting campaign and really pushes the boundaries of people’s ideas on both art and sexuality. This why I love art so much as people are able to use it in so many unique and individual ways, creating a platform for expression that defies normal societal boundaries. It is therefore a shame that the campaign came across difficulty although of course it is not surprising as prejudice of this kind is still evident even in today’s ever changing and progressive world. I would love to know what you think of this as a form of art and whether you agree or disagree with the decision to ban part of the campaign…
